McAllen Memorial H.S. AP Summer Reading

Memorial High School
Summer Reading List 2010

To all students enrolled in the English Pre-AP/AP and Challenge/Pre-AP for the 2010-2011 school year:

Students must read a selection of novels or plays as a summer assignment. These books are important to the development of students’ skills in literary analysis. Students will be expected to discuss the dynamics of each selection; therefore, students should take notes and highlight appropriately.

English I Pre-AP & Challenge I Pre-AP
• All incoming freshmen enrolled in Pre-AP English I courses are expected to read the works listed below before the start of the academic year.
• Students are expected to have a solid background in Greek Mythology. A good source for this information is Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. This is not a storybook; it is written as a reference book. For basic information, students should focus on Chapters 1-4 and 13-14.
A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Newton Peck
• Students should expect to be tested on their knowledge of these two works in some format, including but not limited to writing assignments, tests, or class discussions.

English III AP
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass—Frederick Douglass
• Students should come prepared to participate in graded discussion. Students will also take an objective and subjective test over the work.
The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck
• Thoroughly annotate your personal copy of the novel.
• Students will take an objective test over The Grapes of Wrath within the first week of class; a subjective test may follow.

English IV AP
Boy’s Life by Robert McCammon
Boy’s Life is a modern and extremely lengthy work, but well worth the time and effort it takes to read it – a GREAT novel. Complete the Boy’s Life required journal assignment—due the first day of school. You must see Ms. Grace (room 89) for the journal assignment handout the week of May 18th. NO EXCUSES. (Click link below if you did not get the asssignment.)
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby will be covered extensively starting the third week of school. Therefore, students should begin reading the novel towards the end of the summer. (A week before the first day of school is recommended.) As students read the novel, they should annotate any literary devices that are significant to the work as a whole.
• Students who have read The Great Gatsby before should actively reread it.
